Hi Everyone,
Join Moises Gonzales, Associate Professor, Urban Design; Chair, School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico, for an ONLINE presentation, “Nación Genízara: Ethnogenesis, Place, and Identity in New Mexico” as part of the Friends of History monthly lecture series.
What: This month’s Friends of History First Wednesday Lecture Series features a groundbreaking presentation offering the history of the Genízaro people, shedding light on a critical but overlooked chapter of New Mexico cultural heritage. Genízaros are descendants of 18th and 19th Century Indian captives who, to varying degrees, were acculturated and assimilated into New Mexico’s Hispanic and Catholic society while remaining in a condition of servitude and dependency. This presentation will examine the history, cultural evolution, and survival of the marginalized Genízaro people up to the present day.
